Qualifier Josanne van Bennekom heeft zich zonder veel problemen weten te plaatsen voor de tweede ronde van het $10.000 ITF toernooi in het Spaanse Benicarlo.
De 21-jarige Nederlandse was met tweemaal 6-1 te sterk voor Maria Martinez-Romero (Spa) (WC). Het is voor haar de eerste keer sinds het ITF toernooi in Enschede in augustus van dit jaar dat de Nederlandse de 2e ronde bereikt, toen verloor ze daarin van Nicolette van Uitert. In de 2e ronde stuit van Bennekom op diezelfde Nicolette van Uitert. Zij zorgde in de 1e ronde voor een verrassing door de als 2e geplaatste Tina Schiechtl(Oos, 421)(2) naar huis te sturen. Met 4-6 7-5 6-3 was van Uitert te sterk voor de Oostenrijkse.
Het is na de ontmoeting in Enschede tussen van Bennekom en van Uitert de tweede keer dat zij tegenover elkaar staan in een internationaal toernooi.
